What Is a Company Name Change?

A company name change occurs when a business updates its legally registered name on the Companies House register. Even minor changes must be formally recorded—for example, changing from JS Limited to John S Limited requires an official filing with Companies House.

You can change your company name online by choosing one of our name change packages, starting from £79.99 + VAT. All packages include Companies House filing fees, with a same-day processing option available for an additional charge.

Important:
Your registered company name is different from your business or trading name. You are free to use a business or trading name of your choice, provided your registered company name appears on all official company documents.

What if my new company name contains a sensitive word?

If your proposed company name includes a sensitive word (for example, “King”), it cannot be submitted through online filing. In such cases, the name change must be made via a paper application and supported by additional documentation. Unfortunately, we are unable to assist with paper-based submissions.

If I change my company name, will I receive a new Certificate of Incorporation?

Once Companies House approves the name change, the new company name replaces the previous name on the register. A Certificate of Incorporation on Change of Name will then be available to download from your online account.

This certificate confirms both the old and new company names, along with the date the change took effect. The company number remains unchanged.

Please note:
The certificate will include the previous company name. A standard Certificate of Incorporation showing only one name is issued only at the time of company formation.

Who do I need to notify if I change my company name?

After changing your company name, you should update:

  • HMRC (Corporation Tax, VAT, and PAYE)

  • Your bank

  • Customers and suppliers

  • Service providers and relevant authorities

  • Any other business contacts

You should also update your company stationery, signage, website, and domain name where applicable.

How can I check if my new company name is available?

We strongly recommend checking the availability of your proposed company name using our company name search tool before placing an order. If a submitted name is rejected by Companies House, you can submit an alternative name at no extra cost.

How long does it take to change a company name?

A company name change is typically processed within three working days, depending on Companies House workload. If you need the change urgently, a same-day guaranteed service is also available.
